Quilt Trends for 2020

We are SO excited for this upcoming year; not only is it a new year, but a NEW DECADE! Just like every industry, the quilt world is sure to see upcoming trends in the next twelve months. These are just some of the trends we predict for this year.

1. African Mudcloth Inspired

The home decor world is seeing quite the surge in this beautiful, traditional Malian fabric. Anywhere from pillows to framed fabric as wall-art, Mudcloth is making quite the statement; we have a hunch it’s going to fall over into the quilting world as well. It may take a few years to show up in mainstream quilting, but 2020 could be the year it makes an entrance.

2. Classic Patterns in Solid Fabric

Classic quilt patterns will continue to shine in 2020. Think of your grandmothers quilts, do you see a red and cream mesmerizing 1930’s ‘barn raising’ quilt? Or a pale pink and kelly green ‘double wedding ring’ quilt? How about a pastel ‘orange peel’ baby quilt? Yep, we do too! Now reimagine those patterns in an array of fresh, modern solids and BAM - welcome to quilting in 2020! Not only do solids scream confidence, they’re usually a cheaper option, win win!

3. Straight Line Quilting

Straight line (aka “matchstick quilting”) is a fantastic way to modernize any quilt. These simple, straight quilting lines give a finishing touch that don’t compete with the pattern; it’s a versatile quilting approach that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. This technique is also a great way for you to quilt your quilts on your domestic machine at home. Here is some insight for straight line quilting:

4. Warm Nuetrals

Don't get us wrong, we love a cool grey and a moody blue as much as the next person… but we are SO looking forward to this warmer trend! Cheryl Eisen of Interior Marketing Group (in regards to home trends) said, “In 2020, we're going to see a shift away from the cool color palette, that defined the last decade, towards warmer, more organic tones,” (see reference here). There’s a good chance this trend will spill over into the quilting world as well. One of the great qualities of a warm-toned quilt is that it can instantly look vintage. So, instead of reaching for your stark white, try Free Spirit’s “Natural” or “Mist," they are some of our favorite warm-white background fabrics.

The most important trend of all…..

5. CREATE WHAT YOU LOVE!

We could sit around and speculate about upcoming quilt trends until we are out of bobbin thread… but the most important trend there ever was and will ever be is to be true to what YOU love! Quilting is a beautiful expression of creativity, love, individuality and patience; it should reflect who you are and the artist in you.
